Muslim group calls for burka ban

Last Updated: Thursday, October 8, 2009 | 5:57 PM ET Comments226Recommend103

A Canadian Muslim group wants the federal government to ban two kinds of garments, the burka and the niqab, worn by some women.

The Muslim Canadian Congress said the garments, which cover the face, have no basis in Islam.

The group's spokesperson, Farzana Hassan, said the practice of wearing the burka and niqab is more rooted in Middle Eastern culture than in religious teachings. She added that there is nothing in the Qur'an that stipulates women must cover their faces.

She said the issue is one of public safety.

"To cover your face is to conceal your identity," she said.

"If a government claims to uphold equality between men and women, there is no reason for them to support a practice that marginalizes women."

The burka is a veil that generally covers the entire body, with only a mesh screen left to see through. The niqab covers virtually all of the face — with a slit generally left open for the eyes.

The proposed ban would not extend to the hijab, the head scarf that leaves the face uncovered.

'People feel it's part of their identity'

Mohamed Elmasry, a former president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, downplayed the suggestion that the clothing presents a security risk, saying that only a minority of Muslim women in Canada wear the garments.

He said women should have the choice to cover their face if they wish.

"People feel it's part of their identity; people feel it's part of their culture," he said.

At her home in suburban Montreal, Affifa Naz said she chooses to cover her face behind the loose grey veil that leaves only her eyes visible. Anyone who says she's being forced to do it is insulting her intelligence, she added.

"Coming from a Muslim group, I would think that they would understand," Naz said.

"I mean, every group has their disagreements. You might not believe in it, but there are people who believe in it. I'm not telling you 'go and cover yourself,' [so] don't tell me to take it off, right? Simple as that."

On Thursday, the top Islamic cleric in Egypt barred students from wearing face veils in classes and dorms at Sunni Islam's leading institute of learning, al-Azhar.

The move by the sheik of al-Azhar, Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi, is apparently part of a broader move by the Egyptian government to clamp down on public manifestations tied to ultraconservative Islam in the country.

Headscarves are common in Egypt but relatively few women wear the niqab, which is much more common in Saudi Arabia.

Some opponents have claimed that Tantawi's decision is unconstitutional.

Lil' Hijabi is now...

Yes, you read that right people, i now don the Niqab!
Yesterday was my first day and Alhumdulillah it went pretty well, i mean i don't expect major staring/attention from anyone cuz i live in an area where 90% of the people are Muslims and seeing a niqabi in my area is obviously common.I met my friends for iftaar and they were pretty shocked...i thought they saw this coming:P but they thought i wasn't serious! lol
As for my parents, they're cool with it, my mom was a lil' hesitant, because she thinks i wont be able to handle the responsibility blah blah blah, but i assured her that i'll be fine:)Inshallah.
Anddd as for now, i don't have much to say except that I'm lovinnng it! Mashallah!..and i hope that love remains forever:Plol
Anywayss remember me in ur prayers in this blessed month!

Mwaah!xoxo

Assalamualaikum!!!

How are u all lovely ladies doing? and hows Ramadhaan so far? I know its been a long time since i posted...just been busy and also tryina stay away from the internet this Ramadhaan...which is working only a tinyyy bit!

Ramadhaan has been going very well for me Alhumdulillah, like honestly i thought this Ramadhaan will be so hard since its the summer, but to my surprise, its been really good, mashallah! And i hope it continues. The day passes by so quickly and i dont even feel thirsty, maybe just a lil' bit hungry, i just get this burning sensation in my stomach( if that makes any sense:P) which i get used to, and forget about eventually.

Well ,well ,well...i thought summer just began and voila! i'm back to school for the LAST time!!!Next week tuesday exactly Inshallah! I dont know if i'm happy or sad that this is my last year, its kind of a mixed feeling...But i am definetly sad that summers ending( even though i didnt do much), but i'd rather sleep in till 1 and relax and not worry about anything in the world than having to get back to that typical hectic school life, which is full of studying and tests and assignments and bllaaahh u name it!! and its gonna be even worse this year:( Oh Allah (swt)please help me! And i need all your duaas people, please pray that this last year be the best of all the years and that i bring home flying HIGH marks, which bring flying BROAD smiles on my parents faces..lol.sigh i can be so lame at times:P
Anyways i shall stop with all the whining and go help my mom in the kitchen (but watch her kick me out of the kitchen for doing something wrong as usual:P lol ...sigh)

Alrightyy, Happy fasting everyone!! and remember me in ur duaas<3

The Bountiful Month

Assalamualaikum y'all, i just wanted to share this nice poem that was forwarded to me:)

Ramadan: the bountiful month

Ramadan is neither a month of bounties from the bazaar
Nor a month of beauties from the parlor
Ramadan is neither a month for the kitchen s savories
Nor a month for pastries from the bakeries.
Ramadan is neither a month of television programs
Nor a month of outing programs
Ramadan is the month of Dikr
Ramadan is the month of Fikr
Ramadan is the month of bounties from Allah
Ramadan is the month of beautifying
the soul masha Allah
Ramadan is the month of insurance
from the fire of Hell
Ramadan is the month of investments
for the Judgment Day as well
Ramadan is the month of maintenance
of the body and soul
Ramadan is the month of repentance
from sins on the whole.
